Emergencies very rarely happen during orthodontic treatment. Most problems are minor and can be fixed either at home, or at an emergency appointment with us t Impression Orthodontics.

Here are some of the most common problems our patients experience while wearing orthodontics.

Protruding wire

Protruding wire

If part of an archwire protrudes out from a bracket it can cause rubbing on the inside of your cheek or tongue. Using the tip of a pencil eraser, push the poking wire down or place dental wax on it to alleviate the irritation. In some situations, you may be able to cut the offending piece of wire with small nail clippers (make sure they’re clean first) but we’d first recommend you try and push it back down or cover it with dental wax then come in and see us so we can fix it.

Loose bracket, band or wire

Loose bracket, band or wire

If a bracket or band is still attached to the wire but has come away from your tooth, you should leave it in place and put wax on it. If a wire is loose, try using tweezers to put it back into place. If this does not help, place some wax over it and give our clinic a call.

Loose teeth

Loose teeth

"Loose" teeth are perfectly normal if you are having orthodontic treatment. Your teeth need to loosen first before they can straighten. Once your teeth have been repositioned, and the gums have settled down, your teeth will no longer be loose.

Soreness after an adjustment

Soreness after an adjustment

When you get your braces on, you may feel general soreness in your mouth. Your teeth may also be tender, particularly when using them to bite down on food. This soreness should only last three-to-five days but it’s common to experience it after each adjustment appointment.

To help relieve the soreness, rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Another option is to use Orabase as a temporary covering to the affected area. If the tenderness is severe, take a painkiller like the kind you might choose for headache or similar pain.

Your lips, cheeks, and tongue may also become irritated during the adjustment process, but they will toughen as you get used to wearing your appliance. If your braces are causing any irritation, put wax on the braces to help ease the pain.
